Background
The client sought a private, hands-on introduction to traditional Japanese craftsmanship in Osaka, beyond a typical tourist workshop. miit was asked to arrange direct access to a working artisan's studio led personally by the craftsman, with historical context linking the craft to its origins. The group wanted an exclusive experience pairing hands-on making with visits to related artifacts and architecture, so participants could see the craft's roots firsthand.
Program Highlights
Direct Access to Craftsman
Participants worked in the private laboratory of the craftsman, a 4th-generation craftsman whose family has made Chagama tea ceremony kettles in Kyoto.
Personalized Tableware Making
Using small hammers, participants reshaped soft tin steel into their own tableware design and added a personal stamp, such as their name.
Private Cultural Itinerary
The private group also visited an arts and crafts museum featuring Chagama, Katana, and Suge weed crafts, plus a Japanese garden and house guided by himself.

miit's Role
miit identified and coordinated directly with the craftsman, negotiating access to his family's working laboratory for a private, group-exclusive workshop rather than a public demonstration. miit designed the surrounding itinerary, pairing the hands-on tin steel tableware session with a private visit to an arts and crafts museum and a traditional Japanese garden and house, both guided personally by Kakutani. miit also handled on-site logistics and facilitation throughout the day.
Results
Participants left with tin steel tableware they had personally shaped and stamped under his direct instruction. Pairing the workshop with the museum and garden visit gave the group a fuller understanding of how tin steel craftsmanship relates to Chagama tea kettle making and Japanese cultural history. The private, artisan-led format distinguished the experience from standard tourist workshops, reflecting miit's curated approach to arranging authentic access for private groups.
