Background

The client asked miit for a one-day Nara tour that would avoid the overtourism concentrated around the city's best-known sights. They wanted to explore Nara on foot, visiting major sites such as Kasuga Taisha, Nigatsu-do and the Todai-ji area, while also experiencing quieter historic streets, local food culture and a traditional Japanese garden, all within a single day starting and ending at Kintetsu Nara Station.

Crowd-Conscious Walking Route

The route passed Sarusawa Pond to Kasuga Taisha, through the area near the historic Nara Hotel, up to a view over Nara from Mt. Wakakusa, then to Nigatsu-do.

Isuien Garden Finale

The day ended at Isuien, a garden near Todai-ji where Todai-ji and Mt. Wakakusa serve as borrowed scenery (shakkei), making the garden appear to extend into the distance.

Our Contribution

miit's Role

miit planned a one-day Nara walking route built around the client's request to avoid overtourism. Instead of moving between crowded drop-off points, miit sequenced the stops on foot as a loop from Kintetsu Nara Station: mochi as street food, Sarusawa Pond, Kasuga Taisha, the area near the Nara Hotel, Mt. Wakakusa, Nigatsu-do and its historic streets, and Isuien Garden. miit guided the group throughout and explained the shakkei design of Isuien in context.

Results

The client experienced Nara's major landmarks, including Kasuga Taisha, Nigatsu-do and the Todai-ji area, on a walking route designed to avoid overtourism. The day combined these sites with local street food, a panoramic view of the city from Mt. Wakakusa, quieter historic streets and the borrowed-scenery garden at Isuien, all completed on foot as a single loop from and back to Kintetsu Nara Station, showing how a crowd-conscious Nara itinerary can be delivered in one day.
