Background

This program was run as a pilot to test a Nishikigoi (ornamental koi) farm work tour in Japan. The goal was to show participants the working side of koi breeding rather than finished fish on display: ikeage, the pond harvest in which one-year-old koi kept through a year of selection are moved into an indoor greenhouse to be raised the following year; the selection that decides which fish stay; and a direct sale run by the breeder.

Program Highlights

ソフトグラデーション背景

Pond Harvest Access

Participants watched ikeage as the breeder moved one-year-old koi, kept after a year of selection, from the pond into an indoor greenhouse for next year's growth.

ソフトグラデーション背景

Selection Process

Guests observed how the breeder assessed and sorted koi, deciding which promising fish to keep for next year's rearing and which to offer for sale.

Breeder's Private Koi

Participants helped at the breeder's sale and were shown several koi the breeder refuses to sell, a viewing made possible by miit's direct relationship.

Our Contribution

miit's Role

miit planned this pilot as a hands-on view of Nishikigoi production and arranged it directly with a koi breeder it works with. In advance, miit agreed with the breeder on which stages participants could watch, namely the ikeage pond harvest and koi selection, and how they could help at the breeder's sale. Through this existing relationship, miit also secured a private viewing of a few koi the breeder keeps back and will not sell.

Results

The pilot confirmed that a working Nishikigoi farm can host visitors during core production tasks, not only for viewing finished fish. Participants watched ikeage and koi selection as they actually take place and contributed to the breeder's sale. The private viewing of koi the breeder will not sell showed that miit's breeder relationships open access beyond a standard farm visit, giving miit a tested format for future Nishikigoi programs.
